But many people fail at this strategy when they first start and this is why; most people start out blogging and write about random topics hoping that perhaps one of their articles might by some stroke of luck wind up on the first page of a Google search without a thought to the longtail keywords they will use.

What is Longtail Keywords Research

A Google search is when you type a search term or query into the search box on Google, Yahoo, Bing or any of the other search engines. Let us use an example of a longtail keywords search term “dog training”. After you enter your search term a list of titles and websites appear. There are usually paid search results at the top of the page and along the right side. These are delineated by a thin border or shading surrounding them. Underneath that starts what is referred to as the organic listings. This is information relevant to your search term and for the most part containing the term you used in some form.

They call it organic because it should be content that is not paid for and is purely information for information’s sake. But as I mentioned in the blog post How Can Backlinking Help Me Rank In The Search Engines?, there is no such thing as an organic search. If you are a savvy blogger you will have done research for Longtail Keywords. This is a phrase of 2 or more words that are relevant to the topic you are writing on and a phrase that someone might search for.

Remember These 4 Factors For Researching a Longtail Keywords

There are 4 factors to take into consideration when researching a longtail keyword. They are:

  1. Relevance-the secret here is you want a keyword phrase that not only gets traffic but is relevant to the topic you are writing on. In this way you are getting people that are targeted to what you have to offer, in this case people looking for dog training will find you if you are on the first page of a Google search.
  2. Traffic-over 90% of longtail keywords have insignificant levels of traffic. You may have well written content and even be on the first page of a search but if there is little to no people searching for the term you are writing on, no one will go to your site. When you do find a longtail keyword that gets good traffic these are the statistics of how many people will be looking at your work: 1st in the ranking will get 42% of the traffic, 2nd in line will get 12%, 3rd 8%, 4th 6%, 5th 5%, 6th place gets 4%, 7th ranking gets 3%, and the rest split what is left. So you see how important it is to get a high ranking in order to have visitors to your site.
  3. Competition-This is where many marketers fall flat on their face. You have to pick a longtail keyword that has just the right amount of traffic with just the right amount of competition strength. Remember this: you don’t have to be the most perfect site, you just have to be a little better than the other pages in your search term in order to get ranked higher. You want to look at how many competitors there are for a longtail keyword and the strength of the competition. You need enough competition to get traffic and be able to have more of the items that Google looks for in order to beat out the competition on the search. Then you will be able to place high on the first page.
  4. Commerciality-you do not want to miss out on the most profitable longtail keywords in your niche. You may have a great article with an amazing offer but if no one is buying it is because you are not targeting a buying keyword. This is the difference between using a phrase like “buy a new car” versus “buy a Prius”. The first one is someone looking for a car, any car, they are shopping. The second is specific, this is someone who knows what they want and they are looking for the place to buy it, therefore the second term would be a buying keyword. You want to maximize your return on investment of time and energy but targeting keywords with high commerciality.
